How SAP Joule works: from copilot to a network of agents

Joule is SAP's AI copilot: an assistant natively integrated into SAP applications and grounded in SAP business data. What started as a chat copilot has, through 2025 and 2026, become something bigger - a network of specialized AI agents that carry out real work across business functions.
How Joule works
Joule is not a bolt-on chatbot. It is embedded across the SAP suite as one integrated experience, with a unified interface spanning business functions and well over a thousand skills to perform tasks across the organization. Because it is grounded in your SAP data, it answers and acts with business context, not generic guesses.
From one copilot to many agents
The important shift is architectural. Instead of a single generalist assistant, Joule now adaptively assembles and orchestrates teams of agents:
- Each agent specializes in a business function - finance, supply chain, procurement, HR, service.
- Joule divides an end-to-end process into specialized roles and coordinates them.
- The network can include SAP's out-of-the-box agents and your own custom-built agents side by side.
This is multi-agent orchestration in production: expertise-driven automation where specialists collaborate on one outcome - the same principle we build on at Boidra.
What shipped in 2025–2026
- Skill Builder in Joule Studio - GA July 2025.
- Agent Builder in Joule Studio - GA December 2025, for building context-aware agents that plan, reason and execute multi-step processes.
- Role-based assistants (Q4 2025) - each tailored to a user role, automatically tapping the right Joule agents.
- Expanded agent library - new Joule agents across finance, HR, procurement, supply chain and industry scenarios unveiled at SAP Connect 2025.
- Interoperability - SAP's stated support for the Agent2Agent (A2A) protocol to work with third-party agents.
Why it matters
Joule turns AI from "ask a question, get an answer" into "describe an outcome, and a coordinated team of agents does the work" - inside the systems your business already runs on.
